ABSTRACT

Abstract Indices are used to help on decision-making. This study aims to develop and test an index, which can determine the loss (e.g., herbivorous insects) and solution (e.g., natural enemies) sources. They will be classified according to their importance regarding the ability to damage or to reduce the source of damage to the system when the final production is unknown. Acacia auriculiformis (Fabales: Fabaceae), a non-native pioneer species in Brazil with fast growth and rusticity, is used in restoration programs, and it is adequate to evaluate a new index. The formula was: Percentage of the Importance Indice-Production Unknown (% I.I.-PU) = [(ks1 x c1 x ds1)/Σ (ks1 x c1 x ds1) + (ks2 x c2 x ds2) + (ksn x cn x dsn)] x 100. The loss sources Aethalion reticulatum L., 1767 (Hemiptera: Aethalionidae), Aleyrodidae (Hemiptera), Stereoma anchoralis Lacordaire, 1848 (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), and Tettigoniidae, and solution sources Uspachus sp. (Araneae: Salticidae), Salticidae (Araneae), and Pseudomyrmex termitarius (Smith, 1877) (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) showed the highest % I.I.-PU on leaves of A. auriculiformis saplings. The number of Diabrotica speciosa Germar, 1824 (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) was reduced per number of Salticidae; that of A. reticulatum that of Uspachus sp.; and that of Cephalocoema sp. (Orthoptera: Proscopiidae) that of P. termitarius on A. auriculiformis saplings. However, the number of Aleyrodidae was increased per number of Cephalotes sp. (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) and that of A. reticulatum that of Brachymyrmex sp. (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) on A. auriculiformis saplings. The A. reticulatum damage was reduced per number of Uspachus sp., but the Aleyrodidae damage was increased per number of Cephalotes sp., totaling 23.81% of increase by insect damages on A. auriculiformis saplings. Here I show and test the % I.I.-PU. It is an new index that can detect the loss or solution sources on a system when production is unknown. It can be applied in some knowledge areas.

ABSTRACT

Among Bemisia tabaci species, the invasive MEAM1 and MED species are key agricultural pests for many crops. In Brazil, most part of B. tabaci population outbreaks were associated with MEAM1, which, since 1990s quickly spread across the entire country. Later in 2014, the MED was identified in Brazil, initially more restricted to greenhouses, but suddenly reaching new areas in the South and Southeast open regions. Thus, our objective was to investigate the geographical distribution of MEAM1 and MED on open field crops in Brazil. MEAM1 is still the predominant species on open field crops such as soybean, cotton, and tomato. The sequencing of a cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene fragment revealed a single haplotype of MEAM1, suggesting the establishment of a single MEAM1 strain in the country. The haplotypes found for MEAM1 and MED are genetically related to the globally dispersed strains, Jap1 and Mch1, respectively. Continuous monitoring of B. tabaci species is crucial because landscape alterations, climatic changes, and pest management methods may shift the B. tabaci species distribution and dominance in Brazilian crop areas.

ABSTRACT

Frequencies, magnitudes, and distributions of occurrence can affect the events. The problem can be worse or the solution better if greater frequencies and magnitudes are presented with aggregated distribution in the production system. Indices, hence, are used to assist in decision-making on certain issues. The system formed by Caryocar brasiliense Camb. (Malpighiales: Caryocaraceae), a typical and economically important Brazilian Cerrado tree species, and its several arthropods are adequate to evaluate a new index. This study aimed to test an index to identify the loss and solution sources and their importance in the system's loss or income gain. The index is: Percentage of Importance Indice [...] separated the loss sources [e.g., Edessa rufomarginata De Geer, 1773 (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) on fruits = 41.90%)] on the percentage of reduction of fruit production (e.g., 0.13%), calculated the attention level (e.g., 0.10/fruit), with a total lost production of 1.35% (≈ 307 total lost fruits). The % I.I. also separated the solution sources [e.g., Zelus armillatus (Lep. and Servi., 1825) (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) = 55.48%), the non-attention level (e.g., Z. armillatus: 0.394 for E. rufomarginata on fruit), with total income gain of 0.56% (≈ 128 total saved fruits) on the natural system (e.g., C. brasiliense trees). This index can calculate losses or the effectiveness of the solutions monetarily. Here I test the % I.I., an index that can detect the key loss and solution sources on the system, which can be applied in some knowledge areas.

ABSTRACT

The nitrogen cycle represents one the most important biogeochemical process for terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Microbial communities play a crucial role in the processes of transformation of soil nitrogen in the, since they participate in various stages such as nitrification, which is of great importance for agricultural production. Among the most used molecular markers to assess ammonium oxidizing microbial populations activity have been considered widely the genes encoding key enzymes such as ammonium monooxygenase (AMO) subunit A. However, it is not fully understood whether the expression of this enzyme is directly related to the crop yield. In this context, this research work evaluated the expression of the amo-A gene of bacterial and archaeal communities present in a rice field previously characterized by environments. Real-time PCR (RT-qPCR) and digital PCR (RT-dPCR) techniques were used to quantify the abundance of archaea and ammonium-oxidizing bacteria (AOA and AOB, respectively). In this work it was found that in the analysis of metagenomic data there was a greater presence of AOB in rhizospheric soil samples while AOA were predominant in bulk soil samples, however, the expression of the amo-A gene was not detected. associated with the community of bacteria in the soil samples analyzed. On the other hand, it was found that the transcripts of the amo-A gene of the AOA community did not present differences between the characterized environments. Furthermore, the expression of transcripts is not related to any of the chemical properties evaluated. Finally, the quantification strategies for RT-qPCR (plasmid and quenching) turned out to be homologous and functional to identify the expression of the AOA amo-A gene, while the RT-dPCR technique was more precise for the analysis of the community of AOB and AOA.

ABSTRACT

Currently, one of the most critical challenges facing farmers is the production of food under adverse weather conditions. By 2050, an increase in the production of staple foods is estimated due to demographics, thereby increasing the depletion of natural resources. Among the biological alternatives is the use of inputs based on beneficial microorganisms such as the Trichoderma genus, which have been used in agricultural fields for biological control against a large number of phytopathogens. However, other beneficial properties of this genus for the plants it colonizes, and the ecosystem are still little known. Therefore, a search for scientific articles was carried out in Academic Search Ultimate, BioOne, Acsess, Esmerald, Fuente Academic, ScienceDirect and Springer, between 2015 and 2023, with two exceptions from previous years. The keyword "Trichoderma" was used and those related to microbial interactions and their agricultural application. Therefore, this review summarizes the current bibliographic findings of this genus, that shows its high capacity towards the sustainable development of agroecosystems. Several investigations report its ability to induce plant defense, promote growth and root development, and stimulate and synthesize substances that help strengthen soil fertility. This improves the yields of the crops to which they are associated. With this, the application of Trichoderma can reduce the negative effects caused by the use of agrochemicals and synthetic fertilizers, contributing to a more sustainable production.

ABSTRACT

Current Indian food system is not sustainable as it fails to fulfil its primary function of delivering adequate nutrition to its population while causing high environmental impacts along with widespread poverty among farmers. Here, we discuss how recent research has enabled quantification of a country’s current food system sustainability through multiple indicators across nutrition, environmental, and economic dimensions. This data can be used by policy makers, farmers, businesses, consumers, and other stakeholders to make scientific evidence-based informed decisions regarding which diets and food items to promote or discourage in near future to make progress towards sustainability. While several government initiatives are underway to transform Indian agri-food sector, the need of the hour is multi-sectoral collaboration across ministries along with dietary behavior changes by consumers, and innovations in agritech and food formulations by businesses to make farm production more efficient and products more nutrient dense.

ABSTRACT

The continuous growth of the global human population and the depletion of natural energy resources are posing a threat to the environment and the sustainable supply of food and energy. To address this issue, a solution known as "green technology" has been developed, focusing on the use of eco-friendly approaches. One of these approaches involves harnessing the power of cyanobacteria, which are ancient microorganisms that have existed on Earth for a long time. This approach was used to probe the diversity of phototrophic microorganisms in Wheat samples. The presence of nif genes allows cyanobacteria to x nitrogen which plays a vital role in nitrogen cycle and biological processes such as plant growth and soil fertility. Wheat production test in current study evaluates the yield and quality of wheat crops. It shows factors such as improvement in growth, heat resistance and environmental adaptability, improvement in production; provide insights for optimizing cultivation practices and ensuring successful high yield. Identication of Cyanobacteria for their combination of nif and molecular identity is prior for production of bio fertilizers. Cyanobacteria can be cultivated on a large scale to produce biomass that has multiple uses, including biofertilizer, secondary metabolites, cosmetics, and medicines. In the eld of agriculture, production of healthy crop cyanobacterial biofertilizer are being increasingly used in eco-friendly and sustainable practices. These biofertilizer are produced through mass cultivation of cyanobacteria and offer several benets.

ABSTRACT

Monitoring soil moisture content is especially important as it provides relevant information for making informed decisions regarding irrigation, fertigation, and water stress management. This study aims to validate a model for estimating soil water content using diffuse reflectance spectroscopy in the near-infrared range. The evaluated soils come from the municipalities of Puerto Gaitán (Meta), Espinal (Tolima), and Mosquera (Cundinamarca). In the first two municipalities, rigid networks were established to select sampling points, with two depths considered for each case (0-10 and 10-30 cm; 0-10 and 10-25 cm, respectively). For the third municipality, 77 soil pits were described, and samples were taken at depths of 0-10 and 10-35 cm. Subsequently, moisture content was evaluated at 0, 15, and 30 % moisture levels. The obtained data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Cross-validation and external validation were applied to each model, and a general model was developed based on the data from all three sites. The obtained models for each sampling site and the general model demonstrated good predictive capacity. Based on the results, it is affirmed that near-infrared diffuse reflectance spectroscopy is an excellent option for determining soil water content. Similarly, principal component analysis identified differentiation between water contents of the studied soils.

ABSTRACT

Coffee is one of the most economically important crops in India and also across the world. Apart from the abiotic stress, a USD 495.5 billion coffee industry suffers from the outbreak of various diseases caused by pathogenic fungus, bacteria and viruses. The presence of Resistance Gene Analogs (RGAs) in coffee plant is the most prominent marker of resistance against the pathogens. The current study aims to isolate resistance gene analogs from the nucleotide binding site – Leucine rich repeats (NBS-LRR) region of the Coffea arabica chromosome.

ABSTRACT

The field of nanotechnology is quickly developing and emerging since it has enormous potential for various human uses. With their unique, size-based physical and chemical attributes, nonmaterials generated and engineered through nanotechnology have many applications in biomedicine and agriculture. Theranostics is a branch of nanomedicine that uses small, highly surface-area nanoparticles to diagnose and treat diseases. Nanomaterials have a wide range of uses in agriculture, from fertilizers that improve soil nutrient uptake by plants to nano pesticides that control a variety of pests, including fungi, phytophagous insects, and weeds, increasing food output. Agriculture and food security are intimately connected, and many researchers are interested. Agriculture production depends on many difficulties due to the severe effects of climate change, water problems and changing the distribution of insect pests. Meanwhile, it faces tremendous challenges in maintaining food security for a massive population amid declining resources. Research is actively exploring the use of nonmaterial in agriculture due to their tremendous promise. Despite their good qualities, nonmaterial present risks to the environment and human health, necessitating risk assessment studies. Green nonmaterial synthesis may lessen the usage of toxic agrochemicals that pollute the environment and enter biological systems, providing an environmentally safe, environmentally friendly, and economically advantageous option. In this critical evaluation, nanoparticles are used in agriculture.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: This article analyzes the guidelines on food education and agricultural promotion that circulated in the Revista Educador Sanitario, the official publication of the national health education department of Argentina during the 1960s. Development: The study explores the discursive adaptations by Argentinean sanitarians to the international development guidelines toward promoting the global campaign against "hidden hunger," which referred to the cultural eating patterns of low nutritional quality food. Then, the study examines the dietary prescriptions for popular families that were intended to stimulate quality, variety, and austerity as healthy habits. Finally, it reviews the tensions and contradictions immanent in the scholarly references to agricultural promotion and free trade rules, highlighting food inequities and the lack of infrastructure at the federal level to successfully achieve the desired agri-food modern- ization. Conclusions: The developmentalist disourse on nutritious food appropriated by the Revista were found to be functional to the climate of peronist prescription. Dietary and home economics suggestions attempted to substitute meat consumption for other protein sources such as legumes and dairy products and that of simple carbohydrates for complex ones such as vegetables. However, their links with the promotion of subsistence agro-economies refuted the prevalence of "hidden hunger" as a food problem in Argentina. In line with the international parameters, this approach would promote a dynamic of food redistribution to replenish the gaps in the domestic market and stimulate net exports by preventing the erosion of exportable balances.

ABSTRACT

Aims: To evaluate interaction of soil pH and acidity with weather on Rice Brown spot (BS) occurrence in rice lowlands. Study Design: Cross sectional study. Place and Duration of Study: Four distinct rice lowlands belonging to different climatic zones (forest, transitional and savanna) of Côte d’Ivoire during cropping seasons of 2021. Methodology: BS characterization were done in different farmer fields where soil samples were also collected during dry and rainy seasons. Soil silicon and acidity were determined in those samples and rice grain yield at harvest time were recorded in different sites. Weather data related to sites and seasons were used to find out correlations. Results: Occurrence of BS was found in forest zones with scores of 4 and 3 compared to 1 and 2 in savanna and transitional zones, respectively, with seasonal variation. Both rice production and the occurrence of BS were explained by soil parameters in conjunction with climatic parameters. Rainfall (R=0.38) and relative humidity (R=0.64) leaded BS occurrence and decrease of yield. Wind speed (R=0.62) and air maximum temperature (R= 0.63) were the determinant factors affecting rice yields. Si was found to be a component of sustainable soil management that interferes with soil pH in all climatic zones. Combined with Temperature, both soil parameters predicted BS occurrence over 50%. Conclusion: Temperature decrease BS pathogens occurrence whereas high humidity increases its spread. Those parameters combined with silicon which interferes with pH could leads sustainable solutions in BS control. Furthermore, having a deep understanding with rice varietal considerations can significantly improve strategies related to rice cultivation and protection.

ABSTRACT

Agriculture is the major source of food, fibre and raw materials essential to human life. Consequently agriculture has been one of the basic occupations of man throughout the world. Interest in the economic aspects of production, distribution and economic policy relating to agriculture and to the use of farm products is therefore, worldwide. The principle of agriculture is that it deals with life, and with living substances. Its products are the results of processes of life and its means of production is the living soil. A cubic centimeter of fertile soil contains million of living organisms, the full exploration of which is far beyond the capacities of man. Man's management of the land must be primarily oriented towards four goals-health, beauty, permanence and productivity. Agricultural Cropping pattern means the proportional are wider different crops at a particular point of time. The cropping pattern of any region is the outcome along process of historical evaluation. In the present paper attempts to analysea the trends of cropping pattern and appraises the impact of cropping pattern on agricultural development in Andhra Pradesh.
